The Mainichi Shimbun paper’s Mantan Web section and the BBC have both posted images of the 18-meter-tall (about 59-feet-tall), “life-size” Gundam statue as it nears completion for its July unveiling. (In BBC’s linked page, select the fourth image from the left in the bottom menu.) The statue marks the 30th anniversary of the first anime series in the Mobile Suit Gundam space war anime franchise.
The Yahoo! Japan website now has six videos dedicated to the making of this statue. (The videos require Microsoft’s Silverlight browser plugin.) The latest videos focus on the “armor” on the statue and the coloring.
Starting this July, the statue will be available for free public viewing for two months at the Shiokaze Park on Tokyo’s artificial Odaiba island. The theme of the three-phase Mobile Suit Gundam 30th Anniversary Project is “Always Beginning.” The life-size Gundam represents the “Real G” phase of the project, while this August’s Gundam Big Expo convention represents the “Feel G” phase. “Soul G” will be a collaborative music event planned for the Gundam franchise this year. An anime adaptation of Harutoshi Fukui’s Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn novels and a film version of Sunrise’s Mobile Suit Gundam 00 television anime series were both announced earlier this year.
